How to transcribe an audio file

  1. 1 Select an audio file above, or drag it onto the upload area. MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS and AAC files all work.
  2. 2 Select "Upload & Process". The file is converted on our servers, so its format and bitrate do not matter.
  3. 3 When processing finishes, the transcript shows each speaker labeled and every segment timestamped.
  4. 4 Correct any segment in the editor, then export the transcript as TXT for free, or as SRT, VTT or JSON on a paid plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about using VocaScript.

Which recordings give the most accurate transcript?
Interviews, lectures, voice memos, phone calls, meetings and dictation all transcribe the same way. Accuracy depends mostly on the recording: a single clear voice close to the microphone gives the cleanest text, while crosstalk, music under speech and a distant microphone lower it. Words that cannot be made out are marked [inaudible] rather than guessed.
Which audio formats can I upload?
MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, AAC and WMA work, along with less common formats such as AIFF, AMR voice notes and M4B audiobooks. Every file is converted before transcription, so there is no need to convert it yourself first.
How long can an audio file be?
Without an account, one transcription covers up to 5 minutes of each file. A free account covers up to 25 minutes per transcription, within 120 minutes per month, and you can continue a longer file from where its transcript stopped. Paid plans cover up to 4 hours per transcription on Plus, 8 hours on Pro and 16 hours on Max. When a recording runs past your limit, the transcript shows where it stopped.
How large can an audio file be?
Up to 1 GB without an account and 2 GB with a free account, rising to 16 GB on Max. For audio, the length limit is reached long before the size limit: an hour of MP3 at 128 kbps is under 60 MB.
Can it tell speakers apart in an interview or meeting?
Yes. Speakers are detected automatically and labeled Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. Rename a speaker once and the new name applies to every segment they spoke.
Is VocaScript free, and do I need an account?
Yes. You can transcribe without an account. A free account gives you more minutes, longer transcriptions and your transcripts on every device. If you reach a limit as a guest, sign in and try again from the same page.
