How to transcribe a Zoom recording
- 1 Find the recording. Local recordings are saved on your computer in the Zoom folder inside Documents; cloud recordings are under Recordings on the Zoom website.
- 2 Upload the recording file on this page. The M4A audio-only file that Zoom creates is smaller and uploads faster than the MP4.
- 3 Every participant who speaks is labeled as a separate speaker, with a timestamp on every segment.
- 4 Export the transcript as TXT for free for meeting notes, or as SRT, VTT or JSON on a paid plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about using VocaScript.
Where does Zoom save my recordings?
Local recordings go to a Zoom folder in your Documents folder by default, with one subfolder per meeting. Cloud recordings are listed under Recordings in your account on the Zoom website, where you can save them to your computer.
Which Zoom file should I upload?
Either file works. The M4A audio-only recording gives the same transcript as the MP4 and uploads much faster.
Can I paste a Zoom recording link?
Not when the link asks for a passcode or a Zoom sign-in, because VocaScript cannot open it. Save the recording to your computer and upload the file instead.
Are participants labeled by name?
Speakers are detected automatically and labeled Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on. Rename each one once, and the name applies to every segment they spoke.
How long can a Zoom recording be?
Without an account, one transcription covers up to 5 minutes of each file. A free account covers up to 25 minutes per transcription, within 120 minutes per month, and you can continue a longer file from where its transcript stopped. Paid plans cover up to 4 hours per transcription on Plus, 8 hours on Pro and 16 hours on Max.
Is VocaScript free, and do I need an account?
Yes. You can transcribe without an account. A free account gives you more minutes, longer transcriptions and your transcripts on every device. If you reach a limit as a guest, sign in and try again from the same page.
